Naughty Dog's first PlayStation game is a platformer built out of corridors rather than open spaces. Most levels run into the screen from behind Crash's shoulder, some run side-on like a 2D game, and a few run straight at the camera while something enormous chases you. You play a bandicoot mutated by Doctor Neo Cortex, fleeing across his island chain and working back toward the scientist himself, whom you finally face aboard his airship.
Crash spins, jumps and body-slams, and almost everything else hangs off crates. Wumpa fruit inside them builds toward extra lives at a hundred, Aku Aku masks absorb hits and grant brief invincibility at three, and stepping on a TNT crate lights a three-second fuse you have to jump away from. Between platforming stages sit boss fights with Papu Papu, Ripper Roo, Koala Kong, Pinstripe Potoroo, Doctor Nitrus Brio and finally Cortex.
The difficulty is the whole character of this first entry. Crash dies to one hit without a mask, there is no mid-air correction to speak of, and gems demand every single crate broken with no deaths after the first checkpoint. Saving is not on demand either: progress is recorded at bonus rounds, after bosses, or through a written password rather than whenever you choose.
You can play with keyboard, gamepad, or touch (on mobile). The default keyboard layout is below; remap any key inside the emulator settings.
The game offers a save after boss fights and at bonus rounds, either to a memory card or as a password you write down. Collecting a gem on its own does not store your progress, so reaching a bonus round matters more than simply finishing a stage.
Break every crate in a level and finish it without dying after the first checkpoint. Clear gems exist on most stages, while the coloured gems appear on specific levels and open alternate routes that lead to crates otherwise impossible to reach.
Sunset Vista, Slippery Climb and The High Road are the three usually named. Sunset Vista is very long, Slippery Climb combines moving platforms with one-hit deaths on a vertical climb, and The High Road strings together rope bridges with gaps in them.
