About Kirby Super Star

Seven separate adventures and two minigames share one Super Nintendo cartridge, each with its own structure and length. Spring Breeze is a compact remake of Kirby's Dream Land; Gourmet Race is a three-course sprint against King Dedede; The Great Cave Offensive is a treasure hunt across a sprawling underground map; Revenge of Meta Knight puts a timer on the stages aboard the battleship Halberd. The menu unlocks the modes in sequence, so each one you clear opens the next.

Kirby still inhales enemies and steals their powers, but in this Super Nintendo entry each Copy Ability is a full moveset rather than a single attack — Sword, Fighter, Yo-Yo and the rest get running attacks, aerials and multi-hit strings instead of one move. Throw an ability onto an enemy and it becomes a Helper that fights alongside you or hands control to a second player. A guard button, new to the series here, rounds out what Kirby can do.

Why play Kirby Super Star

Kirby Super Star is one of only three Super Nintendo games released outside Japan built on the SA-1 enhancement chip, alongside Super Mario RPG and Kirby's Dream Land 3. It is also the point where Kirby stopped being a one-button game: guard, per-ability movesets and the Helper system introduced here became the template the later Kirby games follow.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many sub-games are in Kirby Super Star?

The menu holds seven playable adventures — Spring Breeze, Dyna Blade, Gourmet Race, The Great Cave Offensive, Revenge of Meta Knight, Milky Way Wishes and The Arena — plus the Samurai Kirby and Megaton Punch minigames, nine modes in all. The Arena only appears once the earlier modes are cleared.

Is Kirby Super Star the same as Kirby Super Star Ultra?

No. Ultra is the 2008 Nintendo DS remake, which redraws the visuals and adds modes such as Revenge of the King and Meta Knightmare Ultra. This is the original Super Nintendo version, released in Japan in March 1996, in North America that September, and in Europe in January 1997 under the name Kirby's Fun Pak.

How does two-player work in Kirby Super Star?

Player one throws a Copy Ability at an enemy to turn it into a Helper, and player two can then take control of that Helper. The Helper has its own health bar, can float continuously, and only has the moveset of the ability it was created from.

Is Kirby Super Star really free to play?

Yes. Every game on OldGames.Games is free to play in your browser. There are no downloads, hidden fees or account requirement for single-player games.

Can I save my progress?

Yes. The emulator supports save states — you can save the exact moment you're at and resume later from any device by signing into a free OldGames account.

Does Kirby Super Star work on mobile?

Yes. The emulator includes touch controls optimised for phones and tablets. iPhone, iPad, Android — all supported.

Can I use a gamepad?

Yes. Connect any USB or Bluetooth controller (Xbox, PlayStation, 8BitDo, Switch Pro, etc.) and it will be detected automatically.
