Sega's 1991 platformer is built entirely around momentum. Sonic runs, rolls and loops through six zones of three acts each — Green Hill, Marble, Spring Yard, Labyrinth, Star Light and Scrap Brain — before a short seventh area, the Final Zone. Dr. Robotnik turns up in a new machine at the end of most zones, though Labyrinth swaps its fight for a vertical chase up a flooding shaft and Scrap Brain hands you straight to the Final Zone showdown. Rings act as your health: holding at least one lets you survive a hit, and you scatter them across the floor when it lands.

Stages are wider than they first appear, with high routes that reward speed and low ones packed with spikes, crushers and water. Labyrinth Zone slows everything to a swim and adds a drowning countdown between air bubbles. Finish Act 1 or Act 2 carrying fifty rings and a giant ring appears past the signpost, leading to a rotating maze stage; six Chaos Emeralds are hidden in those, and getting all six changes the ending.

This is the version before the spin dash existed — Sonic 2 added it — so building speed means reading slopes and choosing the right moment to roll rather than charging up on the spot. Tips for new players

There is no spin dash here: press down while already moving to roll, and use downhill slopes to build speed instead of accelerating from a standstill.
Cross the end of Act 1 or Act 2 with fifty or more rings and a giant ring appears above the finish — that is the only way into the Chaos Emerald stages.
Labyrinth Zone's drowning countdown ignores your ring count entirely; learn where the floor vents are, since they only release a breathable bubble every few cycles.
Star Light Zone's seesaws carry an iron ball on one end — jump onto the free end to fling the ball skyward, then stay put, because when it lands on the far side it catapults you to the upper route, highest of all if you are right on the edge.
Each act has a ten-minute limit, and Labyrinth is where players actually hit it, so stop hunting rings underwater once the clock passes seven.
