Flying the Arwing through Andross's invasion of the Lylat system, you spend most missions on rails: the ship moves forward automatically while you aim, boost, brake, and barrel roll to deflect incoming laser fire. Fox McCloud flies with Peppy, Falco and Slippy, who call out enemies over the radio, argue with each other, and get tailed by fighters you are expected to shoot off them.
Most missions have more than one exit, so the campaign is a branching map rather than a fixed list of levels. Meeting a hidden condition sends you along the harder chain, while missing it drops you onto the easier one, and only the difficult route reaches the full final approach to Venom. Some stages break out of the rails into all-range mode, an open arena with free flight, and three trade the Arwing for another vehicle: the Landmaster tank on Titania and Macbeth, and the Blue Marine submarine on Aquas.
The cartridge shipped with the Rumble Pak, the N64's first force-feedback accessory, and the game was built to use it. It also runs a full voice cast in-mission rather than in cutscenes, so briefing and banter happen while you are dodging. Medals require hitting a per-level enemy target with every wingmate still flying at the end, and earning all of them opens Expert mode, which keeps the same targets against much deadlier opposition.
You can play with keyboard, gamepad, or touch (on mobile). The default keyboard layout is below; remap any key inside the emulator settings.
Each mission has an enemy hit-count target, and you must finish the level with all three wingmates still flying. Letting one be shot down and retreat voids the medal. Collecting a medal on every stage unlocks Expert mode, which uses the same hit targets against tougher opposition.
