Unlike anything else in the NES Mario line, the 1988 Western sequel began as Yume Kojo: Doki Doki Panic, a Fuji TV tie-in that Nintendo rebuilt with Mario characters. At the start of every level you pick between Mario, Luigi, Toad and Princess Toadstool, and they handle genuinely differently: Luigi jumps highest but has loose footing, Toad runs fastest and pulls items quickest, Peach hovers for about a second, Mario sits in the middle.
Stomping enemies does nothing here. Instead you pull vegetables from the ground and throw them, or grab a Shy Guy and hurl it into whatever is behind it. Damage runs on a heart meter, jars and doors move you between areas, and throwing a magic potion opens a brief Subspace where coins appear and mushrooms permanently extend your life bar. Twenty levels are spread across seven worlds in the land of Subcon, three per world except the last, which has two.
This is the entry point for Shy Guys, Bob-ombs, Pokeys, Ninji and Birdo, all carried over from Doki Doki Panic and kept in the series ever since. Vertical scrolling, per-level character choice and the pick-up-and-throw verb make it the odd one out on NES, and Nintendo revisited it in Super Mario All-Stars and Super Mario Advance.

Wart, an amphibian king who has taken over Subcon and cannot stand vegetables. The fight has you feeding vegetables from a conveyor machine into his mouth while dodging the bubbles he spits; six connected hits finishes him.
