What runs here is not a Nintendo product. X-Fusion is a fan-made total conversion of the 1994 SNES game Super Metroid, assembled over more than ten years by a hacker known as Metaquarius and released on 1 August 2025, with a final major update, version 1.3, in February 2026. It reimagines Metroid Fusion inside Super Metroid's engine: the B.S.L. research station, the X parasites, the SA-X and Samus's computer companion Adam all return, but the story takes its own turn.
Structure follows Fusion rather than Super Metroid. You work through remixed sectors of the B.S.L. station, Adam briefs you in navigation rooms that offer actual dialogue choices, and SA-X encounters break up the exploration. Fusion's tilesets, music, enemies, power-ups and bosses were rebuilt from scratch in the older engine, alongside new abilities and new boss fights, while movement stays Super Metroid's: wall jumps, bomb jumps and shinesparks all apply.
The achievement is technical. Reproducing Fusion's sectors, navigation dialogue and SA-X encounters inside a 1994 SNES engine took large quantities of custom assembly, new graphics, new enemy behaviour and new cutscene code, plus rebuilt music and a reworked HUD and map. The author states plainly that it is aimed at veterans of both source games, and the late areas expect you to execute advanced Super Metroid movement under pressure.
